Is Coffee Bad for You?

Why Is Coffee Bad For You?

Many articles talk about the the health benefits of drinking coffee daily, but are things really that easy? Surely, coffee cannot be wholly good for you; after all, everything has its benefits and drawbacks. So, is coffee really that healthy for you? Keep reading to find out!

Is Coffee Inflammatory?

Many scientific studies have been published that correlate caffeine from tea and coffee with better health and longevity. More specifically, regular consumption of coffee may reduce whole-body inflammation over time.

Caffeine blocks the effects of a molecule called adenosine in order to wake us up when we drink a cup of coffee. Caffeine molecules attach to adenosine receptors in the brain, which contribute to caffeine's effects such as increasing alertness and reducing fatigue. Blocking adenosine may also block certain biological pathways that produce inflammatory factors, reducing overall inflammation in the body.

What Is The Healthiest Coffee In The World?

In one study, researchers found that older people between the ages of 60 and 89 especially increased inflammation in their bodies after drinking coffee regularly. This is a difficult balance to maintain, however, because too much inflammation can be linked with heart disease, cancer and even Alzheimer's disease.

In another scientific study, half of the older people made more inflammatory enzymes, and half of them made less inflammatory enzymes after drinking coffee regularly.

Overall, more studies need to be completed in order to correctly determine the how exactly caffeine effects the inflammatory system in your body. However, it is a good idea to cut your coffee consumption to less than three cups every day.

Does coffee cause bloating?

Coffee can be known to cause bloating in some people who consume it regularly. When we drink coffee, our bodies produce the hormone cortisol because of the action of caffeine. Cortisol is the hormone that our bodies automatically produce when we are stressed or scared. The unfortunately thing is that our bodies cannot necessarily tell the difference between caffeine consumption and being stressed out. In both cases, cortisol is released, which increases blood sugar levels, and then that increased sugar is turned into fat.

Coffee can also increase activity in the digestive tract which can lead to an increase in bloating. If you happen to drink speciality coffees with lots of cream and sugar, you can also increase bloating.

Luckily, there are ways to avoid the inevitable bloating that comes with regular coffee consumption. If you stick with just a cup or two each day, then you should not worry too much about bloating or fat gain around your middle. If you must have milker, cream, or sugar in your coffee, make sure to add just a little to each of your drinks.

While it is not necessary to cut coffee completely out of your diet to reduce and avoid bloating, drinking it in moderation is always a good idea. Also, it is a good plan to drink at least one glass of water in between every coffee. Drinking caffeine in beverages like coffee can lead to dehydration, so it is imperative to keep drinking water throughout the day as well.

Does coffee affect sperm?

Caffeine has been linked with effects on sperm for years now, which can be a disturbing possibility for many men out there. One study by the National Institute for Health (NIH) observed that semen did not seem affected in patients who drank coffee, tea, and cocoa. This is contrasted with those who drank caffeine containing drinks like cola and other soft drinks. Caffeine containing sodas seemed to decrease semen volume, count, and concentration.

In this study, caffeine ingestion was correlated with DNA defects in in sperm and male coffee drinking was associated with delayed time to fertilisation as well. This study suggests that caffeine intake, through coffee or other drinks can negatively affect male fertility. Of course, more studies must be conducted in order to fully understand the scope of this issue, however men should be careful not to overdo it with the coffee drinking.

The Final Verdict

When it comes down to it, coffee is neither extremely good or extremely bad for you. When it is consumed in moderation, coffee can be a great additive to a healthy life; it can be used to put a pep in your step and keep you going throughout the day.

When coffee is consumed in excess, it can lead to some unhealthy consequences. While caffeine in coffee can decrease inflammation, it can also lead to bloating and weight gain around your midsection. This is especially relevant if you happen to drink coffee with extra milk, cream, sugars, or sugar substitutes.

Over consumption of caffeine in certain drinks like coffee can also decrease sperm virility and effectiveness over time, especially in older men. This is yet another reason to cut down on your coffee consumption and only drink one to three cups every day.
